Summer 2012
June 11–August 17

Museum of the Moving Image offers full-time, paid summer internships. Under the supervision of department heads, interns have the opportunity to learn about the full range of Museum operations. Undergraduates entering their senior year in Fall 2012, college graduates, and graduate students are eligible to apply.

Collection Curatorial Assistant: Interns will assist in the acquisition of objects for the Museum’s collection, and interact with prospective donors.

Collection Management: Interns will become fully familiar with the collections management function, including the completion of the collection inventory and the storage, maintenance, and preservation of objects.

Collection Research and Cataloging: Interns will assist in researching and cataloging objects to be made accessible online, and participate in the Museum’s open-source, web-based collection management software project.

Digital Imaging/Photography: Interns will assist with the digital photography and scanning of Museum artifacts and the correction and editing of images.

Digital Media: Interns will provide technical and production support for the Museum’s exhibitions and assist with the development of public programs.

Film: Interns will work on logistical details and preparations for Museum film programs, and assist with content research for its website and web-based projects.

Living Room Candidate Curatorial Assistant: Interns will assist with research, gathering content, and securing permissions for the 2012 edition of The Living Room Candidate, the Museum’s online archive of historic presidential campaign commercials.

Video Post-Production Intern: Interns will assist with the post-production of videos for online exhibitions, including editing, color correction, encoding, and digital asset management.

A single PDF that includes: 1) a cover letter, 2) your resume, and 3) a 300-word statement describing your interest in one of the positions listed above and your reasons for selecting that position.

Applications must be received no later than March 30. Finalists will be interviewed in person or by phone. Successful applicants will be notified no later than April 27.

I work for a production company in Los Angeles. We are shooting part of a documentary for MTV in the Hartford area. I am looking for a production assistant (paid positions) to assist with our shoot. I wondered if you might have a few students who would be interested.

Our special is an upuplifting TV documentary special about young people coming of age and making the big life choices that we all face. It is a socio-positive portrayal of real life issues and meant to be counter programming to the ‘Jersey Shore’ highly dramatized, sometimes negative, genre of shows.

She's looking for interns and would like to work with our department....

"I am an Emmy Winning producer working in Commercial Video Production in CT and NYC.
I am currently booking a few projects that would be a wonderful opportunity for a
student to gain some experience and samples for their reel. Some examples are green
screen video for an iPad application, promotional video for a photographer in NYC who
has worked with David Bowie and P-Diddy, and a 30 second commercial spot for a home
remodeler.

I would like to offer the opportunity to a student or two to run a second camera, act
as PA, assist with lighting, and learn how a commercial video environment works. We
would be able to help a student establish a work reel and references.

Can you recommend any students who are looking for work? Some jobs will be paid,
others will be a learning opportunity.

NFFTY is the largest and most influential youth film festival in the world. In 2011, we screened 225 amazing films from the best filmmakers 22 and younger representing 40 states and 20 countries. VIDEO PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY - VJ + HARTT SCHOOL

My name is Jason Loblein. I'm a senior at the Hartt school. I'm currently in the process of putting together pieces of music for my senior recital, and I'm interested in collaborating with one of your students. I'm looking for someone who is familiar with a typical VJ setup to accompany electroacoustic music. Styles could include dubstep, IDM, classical, and experimental (think Aphex Twin meets Hans Zimmer meets Amon Tobin). Some of the tracks could be accompanied by live instruments and some could incorporate live improvisation via MIDI controllers. I would like to use video collages with a dark and intense feel, that could react to impulses generated by the music. The recital would take place sometime in late spring. Please pass this along to any or all of your students whom you think would be interested.

This project was initiated by Ken Steen with sound works from the Hartt School Composition Department and video by Gene Gort's Intermedia Studio class, Media Arts, Hartford Art School. Gene has contributed a short video piece to this project too. The works were showcased at the University's Earth Day presentation at Gengras Student Union as well. The works are being presented in a converted phone booth, the micro-gallery at the Connecticut Historical Society, 1 Elizabeth Street in Hartford through June.

Experimental Moving Images from the ATNE Community
On April 22 Axiom will host Experimental Moving Images from the Art Technology New England Community. Anyone can submit work! All you need to do to be part of the ATNE community is to join over 100 ATNE portal members and make a user profile at arttechne.ning.com. It will take two minutes, and it's free! Then see the call for entries and submission guidelines there.

Art Technology New England, a program of Boston Cyberarts, launched in 2009 is a quickly growing consortium of people working at the intersection of technology and the arts. Short work in any genre including narrative, non-narrative, documentary, experimental, that challenges obvious conventions of the medium will make up the program. Project 35 is a year long exhibition of video art from around the world. Every three weeks a new selections of eight to nine videos will be on view in the Vincenza Uccello '56 DHL '00 Gallery. Part I includes videos by Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn and Phù Nam Thúc Hà, Guy Ben-Ner, Yukihiro Taguchi, Dan Halter, Zhou Xiaohu, Wand Raimundi-Ortiz, Kota Ezawa, Edwin Sanchez, and Robert Cauble. Project 35 is a traveling exhibition organized and circulated by iCI (Independent Curators International), New York. The exhibition and tour are made possible, in part, by grants from The Cowles Charitable Trust; Foundation for Contemporary Art; the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation; The Toby Fund; and iCI Benefactors Agnes Gund, Gerrit and Sydie Lansing, Jo Carole Lauder, and Barbara and John Robinson.

He is an extremely thoughtful, funny, and manually talented guy making stuff at home, in the garage, in the basement; He also runs this website. THE SYNC EFFECT

New Media New Music New England and the Hartford Sound Alliance present THE SYNC EFFECT, a program of new music works inspired by the video work of Gene Gort, Devan Mulvaney and Liz Stephens. In keeping with the long tradition of producing sound for moving pictures, composers Lief Ellis, Matt Sargent, Daryl Seaver, Bill Solomon and Ken Steen have written an evening of new works of acoustic and electronic music to be performed live with video projection. Instrumentation includes percussion, slide guitars, electric bass, ukelele, voice, cello, saxophones and trombone. Selections from Gene Gort's recent video series, "Still Lifes + Silent Movies", Devan Mulvaney's "Light Movement" and Liz Stephens' "Doors" will be featured.

The concert will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2009 in the Video Studio, second floor of the Hartford Art School, Renée Samuels Center, University of Hartford at 7:30 PM. Admission is free but seating is limited. The project will also be streamed live on www.hartfordsoundalliance.com.

Hartford Sound Alliance is a collective of Hartford, CT based composers and performers dedicated to the creation, performance and promotion of new music via composition, improvisation and sound installation, as well as intermedia and interdisciplinary projects. HSA wishes to be an inclusive organization to help further create a rich new music community in Hartford and surrounding communities.

New Media New Music New England is a curatorial project organizing works and events by artists and composers in the six New England states. Our aim is to create a loose network of producers and venues across the region to promote and raise the visibility of new works in the genre for live events, gallery installation and web projects. Department updates and stuff...

Well, Sylvia and Ben are moving back to the midwest and we bid them goodbye and good luck. Silvia moves into a new TENURE-TRACK position @ University of Illinois, South Bend. Ben returns to the Art Institute, Chicago. They will be missed...

We have a replacement for new media in the department, Andy Deck. He is terrific. We are really looking forward to his contribution to the department and the school. His website shows how prolific he is.

Ken Steen and Gene Gort are in residence @ I-Park, a 450 acre property in East Haddam, CT. They are collaborating on a new media chamber opera entitled "Each to Each". The website for sketches they are working on is each2each.net and Ken's blog is http://blog.kensteen.com/ where he is posting work-in-progress and writing about the project.

The Robert Carl concert held this past spring was videotaped and there will be excerpts posted here later this summer. There were some audio glitches that are being ironed out... sorry for the delay (graham)...

And last but NOT LEAST... Tim Lawless, our brilliant and tireless department technician, was married to the lovely Elaine last weekend and we congratulate them!!!!! It was a very moving event...

Featured is the interactive lounge project from Silvia's Spatial Multi- Media class in the Media Box 1. Also featured is the website for the New Media Collaborative project "FOUR WORD STORIES".... and of course a reception to follow including the ritual of eating tortilla chips and salsa w/sour cream.... it's a tradition....
